10 YEAR CAMPAIGN FOR COMPASSIONATE CITIES

The Compassionate Cities Campaign will begin in Seattle as a collaboration between Seattle City Government representatives and its citizens that will recognize compassion as an ethical imperative in public policies affecting how its residents meet their basic human needs. Its intention is to grow over the next decade into a global initiative that will bring the world’s cities together to form a network of “Compassionate Cities”.CAMPAIGN LAUNCH FLYER.pdf

This initiative is being sponsored by the Compassionate Action Network - CAN (www.compassionateactionnetwork.com), a major sprout from last year’s “Seeds of Compassion” Program that brought His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other global luminaries to Seattle. The prominent participants include the Seattle Human Services Coalition (www.shscoalition.org), a multi-racial, multi-cultural group of human service providers and concerned community members committed to helping Seattle-King County residents meet their basic human needs.

The New Year’s Eve event will be hosted by Northwest Interfaith Community Outreach (NICO) and moderated by Rabbi Ted Falcon, Sheikh Jamal Rahman and Rev. Donald Mackenzie, also known as The Interfaith Amigos. The agenda will include a presentation of the Charter for Compassion (www.charterforcompassion.org), a discussion of the Charter’s roots in the Golden Rule that is embedded in all the world’s religious and spiritual traditions, and an explanation of how the campaign will utilize the power of social networks to reweave and strengthen local civic, economic and political actions. The highlight of the Green Lake Library gathering will be a “town hall” style meeting where representatives of public and private organizations and citizens will dialogue about how this campaign can mobilize our personal and collective resources to establish an environment that will incent everyone to live into the Principles of Compassionate Action in their personal and public actions.

Everyone is welcome: there is an urgent need today for us to mobilize collective action to multiply our individual power and co-create positive change in our community.
