The elder brother of the New York Times bestselling author Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche (Joyful Wisdom, The Joy of Living), Tsoknyi Rinpoche is one of the most beloved teachers among the new generation of Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters.
Tsoknyi’s story is an unusual one. Identified at the age of eight as the reincarnation of an important Tibetan meditation master who had perished during the Cultural Revolution, he did not begin his formal training until the age of twelve. His years at the monastery—though extraordinarily valuable—were marked by internal conflict, as he struggled to adapt to the responsibilities thrust upon him, balancing the rigors of monastic training against his own high spirited personality and the memories of freedom he’d enjoyed as a child. After completing his training, he relinquished his vows, married and began a family.
Tsoknyi brings, as a married lama raising two daughters, tremendous insight into how to balance a life dedicated to practice with the demands of professional and family life. His teachings have attracted students from around the word, and his fresh views of the western psyche have enabled him to identify with everyday experiences, be they suffering, fear, or joy. In addition, he has a keen interest in the ongoing dialogue between Eastern philosophy and Western research, especially in psychology. His most recent book is Open Heart, Open Mind: Awakening the Power of Essence Love.
