Event Description

Compassionate Action Network will be hosting a special reading group to study Karen Armstrong’s Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life. The group will be held every third Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 PM at East West Bookshop.

On November 16, we will discuss Step 11: Recognition

As part of an international effort to activate the Golden Rule globally, Compassionate Action Network joins reading groups around the world to foster a greater understanding of compassion, and to promote the cultivation and practice of compassion in individual and community life.

TED prize-winner Karen Armstrong believes that while compassion is intrinsic in all human beings, each of us needs to work diligently to cultivate and expand our capacity for compassion. In Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life, Armstrong offers concrete ways of putting compassion into action in our everyday lives.

Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life Reading Groups are affiliated with the Charter for Compassion. The Charter for Compassion is a TED Prize project in collaboration with the Fetzer Institute.

To join this Seattle reading group, please contact Guo Cheen, 206-973-7339    thecompassionnetwork@gmail.com

Thanks Reverend Cheen. I hope to attend tonight's meeting.

I wish I lived in Seattle so I could attend such events. I am, however, ordering the book, and have downloaded/saved the documents pertaining to leading a reading group. Anybody in the Katy (Houston) Texas area interested?

Greetings! Reverend Cheen and the East/West Bookshop gave me permission to shoot a video of this Reading Group on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. I would also like to interview several members of the group, if possible? I propose the times below. Roselle already confirmed. Please let me know if you can join us?

5:00 PM - Rev Cheen
5:20 PM - Roselle
5:40 PM - Ari
6:00 PM - David
6:20 PM - TBD Reading Group Member
6:40PM - TBD Reading Group Member
7:00 Reading Group Begins
(there will probably be a few quick follow-up interview questions afterward)

The result will be a 2+ minute video that will be used when Karen's Armstrong's paperback comes out in late December 2011. The video will appear on the Charter for Compassion web channels along with a revised Reading Group Guide by Roselle Kovtiz.

We would like to videotape some of the discussion, if possible? I realize that people say highly personal things so we will be be sensitive to the group's need for privacy. Thanks for considering this request!

Kind Regards,

I really would like to come tonight but to be honest I just came from almost four hours with doctors. I have been having palpitations and they gave me today a heart monitor that i have to record each time I have one. When I do that the pager looking thing makes a high pitched sound for at least a minute with my heart beats. It is possible it won't happen during the discussion but it could and to be honest I am a bit to embarrassed to keep doing this especially when others are talking and in such a quite and peaceful environment. With any luck next month I won't be wearing this and all will be good. So sorry!

Hi Rev. Cheen,

I planned to attend tonight but was unexpectedly stuck on an hour plus long phone call. I'll look forward to coming to one of your Reading Groups though. Thanks so much for hosting them!

Kind Regards,

PamKM
