HONORING THE HUMAN SPIRIT IN DIVERSE CULTURES AND TRADITIONS
~ Inspired by the Nuns of Gebchak Gonpa ~

Welcoming Wangdrak Rinpoche,
Abbot of Gebchak Gonpa, a Tibetan Nunnery, with co-presenter Caterina De Re, VP of NW Dharma Association

With special cultural tributes from the Tibetan, Mongolian, Native American, Sikh, African American, Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions - and more.

Sunday, June 27, 2010
2:00 to 5:00 pm

Peace, compassion, and respect for the earth are all called for in our modern times. A model of commitment to these values comes from remote Eastern Tibet where the 350 nuns of Gebchak Gonpa devote their entire lives in spiritual practice.

Gebchak Gonpa was founded in 1892 and over time great numbers of women from many parts of Tibet came to join in its unique system of Buddhist practice. During the cultural revolution of the 1960s Gebchak Gonpa was almost completely destroyed and the remaining nuns were dispersed, threatening to destroy the tradition entirely. The surviving nuns lived in labor camps or hid in caves or with relatives far away for about 30 years. Then, the rather old nuns returned and rebuilt the nunnery stone by stone – this devoted place of spiritual practice.

In his first visit outside of Asia, Wangdrak Rinpoche, Abbot of Gebchak Gonpa, is delighted to make Compassionate Seattle his first stop! Rinpoche will share stories of these extraordinary Yoginis and the world’s need for enlightened women. These stories illuminate for us all what it means to be human and representatives of several diverse communities will honor them with special cultural tributes from their own traditions.

Is there anyone who could give me a ride from Seattle? I live in West Seattle in the Admiral area so as close to there as possible. Thanks, Anita
