Compassionate Seattle

We are meeting Sunday morning 10/18 the day after Connecting for Compassionate Action for a “harvest and reflection” experience. We're looking to build upon the momentum and outcomes that will have emerged on Saturday. Hopefully the mood is celebratory and uplifting for all of us who are working together to co-create this gathering!

Start Time and Duration?
If we meet for two hours at best we’ll get is a one hour group discussion. Which isn't bad, but its not a lot of time for a group our size to reflect and identify opportunities for follow up. I am open for getting together for three hours.

Skye was also hoping that we could meet early so she could attend an event back in Bellingham she suggested 8 AM I don't feel good about asking people to meet on a Sunday morning and 8 a.m. What about doing 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM? Lets nail down the time asap.

Based upon the responses I am getting I am confident that “connecting for compassionate action” will be well attended and a success. There will have been innumerable person-to-person connections that will hopefully lead to new alliances, exchanges, cooperation and collaborations.

I see this 10/18 experience as a chance to contribute to CAN as a whole. By reviewing the emerging possibilities and commitments we can further refine what CAN is and isn't and how it can fulfill its mission of awakening compassion in ourselves, our children, and the world.

During the process of producing this gathering CAN itself is coming into form in terms of its own identity, structure, rules, resources, etc.. We are discovering what CAN could become so we can have a powerful conversation about what CAN should become and then to figure out how to get there. We are doing this publicly in the CAN Leadership group.

There's also lots of good ideas about how to “harvest” outcomes from such an open space. Susan Partnow offered to help in this design discussion and Anne proposed the following:

“I have a simple proposal for the OCt. 18th Conveners gathering: We will have available the OCt. 17th Reports from sessions convened. I suggest that we convene as a design group, and using a four quadrant matrix, we assign work that is continuing to the appropriate quadrant: (1) Needs CAN Board action; (2) CAN project already underway; (3) Project has whatever it needs to continue; (4) Project is not a CAN project, but needs CAN help.I suggest that we convene at 10:00 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM on the 18th.”

Having the open space session reports will be very helpful to gain an appreciation for what is bubbling up. Between now and then I want to use these days to align ourselves and our thinking about CAN so we can further refine and deepen what CAN provides.

If you have suggestions about how to use our time please share them here!

I can make either time. Anne's suggestions sounds good to me. Let me know if there's anything I can do.
On our phone call yesterday, we decided to convene at 9:00 and end at noon. Jon will get us a space, either at Yaffa's house or at another central location.

So far there seems to be considerable agreement that we begin with reflection, and then do the quadrant work to at least identify the nature of the on-going work on who will be doing it.
From Susan Burns:

"I do echo the concerns that the reflection not be expensed for the organizing. I really think the reflection should begin at the end of the 17th and then begin again with the convening group reflecting on that reflection on the 18th. Focused with thoughtful and clear questions, Next Steps should emerge naturally. I would not like to see the meeting too rushed as a result of the emphasis put all on the planning. The details might be more helpful on the website for workgroups later."
Hi All,
Margo and I are happy to attend. We have to leave exactly at 12:30 so we can go to the Talk we are hosting for June Holley at 1:30 at cascade people's center. I know we will all be filled with the doings of CAN by then, but this is a rare opportunity to hear from and talk with one of the most innovative people working with social networks I know.

June comes from Athens Ohio and has a long history of helping cooperative ventures get started - since the 1970's. Over the years, she has worked with social networks and their analysis, long before there were computer social networks. She calls her self a network weaver and has been working with a wide range of folks from local food groups to major health and social service networks. She will present on some new thinking on her part including rhizomic organizing, communities of practice and creativity in social networks. She and I met recently when I was in Athens and we talked a lot about how to step up a holonic notch (Margo's and my term) and SLOW ORGANIZING, ways in which we can develop deep relationships, get stuff done and be effective. Fits right in with the directions Jon and the rest of us are going. Hope youall can come.....
Bill
