Washington SEL Alliance - Social and Emotional Learning Standards

How can we make education in compassion a practical part of every child's educational process? Most teachers won't be able to focu on transforming education unless they get the proper institutional support from administrators, parents, and polic-makers.

The Washington SEL Alliance is a public-private partnership established to advance and support social and emotional learning as a part of Basic Education in Washington State. We believe that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) – intentionally realized through skill development and healthy learning environments – is an essential component of successful classrooms and schools. The Washington SEL Alliance works to align policies, establish standards, foster collaborative relationships with early learning initiatives and university educator certification programs, promote effective practice, and advance science through supporting research on the social and emotional development and learning of preK-12 students.

I am a Social-Emotional Learning Consultant in the Cleveland area. I would so love for Ohio to work towards developing these standards for our state. I would appreciate any advice as to how to begin this process.

I am a Curriculum Resource Teacher at Pasadena Unified School District. A few years ago, I completed an action research project which at the time I approached as character development. The study focuses on development of social emotional characteristics among second grade students using reflective practices and lessons based in the four-fold way paradigm. It is my quest as an educator to raise teacher awareness about the importance of addressing social emotional learning among our students and to advocate teaching practices that facilitate student social emotional growth. My study was published in Windows To Our Classrooms: Teacher Research Anthology by CRESS at UC Davis. How could I be of help to your work?
Mraineh: I would be glad to see your project write-up. My organization offers continuing education courses for teachers--see www.hol.edu

You might be interested in the thesis of fellow CAN member Dr. Lee Brown...one of his focuses is emotional education and emoiotnal competency...find him at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where he is the Director of Aboriginal Health Sciences...perhaps you are aware of him already?

Here in Massachusetts, where publication of guidelines for implementation of an k-12 SEL curriculum is mandated in the new anti-bullying law, we are following Washington's example closely as we try to work with the business community.

www.SEL4Mass.org was set up so that the general population can understand what SEL is all about.  In a state where 22% of the state budget is spent just on the two issues of crime and substance abuse, we have to convince unions, political leaders and schools that SEL can produce results in academics as well as changed behaviors that will reduce the need for $6.5 billion dollars annually.
