Sadly having followed your prompt PamKM I find myself no further forward. I also find myself disappointed @ the lack of activity in this group.
Do we have 40+ observers ?

My pleasure. Yes, I believe the Unitarians in the UK have at least one reading group for Karen's book. You might try contacting Sue Woolley at sue.woolley@virgin.net and tell her that I referred you. Your questions are very important but we've learned that these deep topics really need to discussed in person. Good luck.

Thanx for your response Pam. Sadly as a unemployed UK resident the option you suggest is beyond my capabilities. Maybe if an attendee could ask my question and post the response. Are there plans for any initiatives in th UK ?

I meant to say "your" question below.

Hi Hilton, I'm sorry but I don't know if our question was discussed. If you're in Seattle, feel free to attend the Reading Group next week. The location, time, and address are below. Thanks!

I was wondering whether my question has been discussed @ any of these meetings. I also struggle with the aspect of pretending/visualising the potential of 4 qualities, rather than a realistic appraisal.

We had a wonderful discussion during the last Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life Reading Group meeting in Seattle. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 21 at East West Bookshop. We'll be discussing Step 8: How Do We Talk to Each Other. This is such an important topic regardless of what is going on, but especially as we reflect on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Cheen has posted details here.

We haven't had much activity in this group for awhile. What's on your mind in regard to the Twelve Steps? Are there any obstacles you're finding particularly difficult? Any experiences you'd like to share?

I just watched Joan Halifax's TED talk (which I highly recommend and is posted on this site--see Videos on the right) and was struck by her comment about cultivating an undefended heart. When I am aware of it and feel a tightness around my heart, I do try to open it to others, but it is not undefended. I love that image, though, and will make that an intention.

Thanks Roselle. I plan to be there!

If you're in Seattle, join us on Wednesday, August 17 at 7 p.m. to discuss Step 7: How Little We Know from Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life at East West Bookshop. Rev. Cheen is back from her travels and will lead us through the discussion. I just discussed this step with a small group of friends and it proved to be a rich topic. Details on the reading group are available here. Hope to see you on Wednesday!

For those of you working your way through the book, feel free to share your impressions or questions for this CAN group here.

Note line 13 states Buddhists believe that 'self' is an illusion and teach a doctrine of 'no-self' (anatta)
