Introduction to Restorative Circles-Seattle

We envision Seattle as community where conflict is embraced as an opportunity to build community relationships, cultivate trust, and empower citizens.   The mission of Restorative Circles-Seattle is to bring a citywide restorative justice system to Seattle, as a parallel justice system in harmony with existing structures.

A Restorative Circle is a community process for supporting those in conflict that brings all parties together– those who have acted, those directly impacted and the wider to dialogue as equals. Participants invite each other and attend voluntarily. Restorative Circles are facilitated in 3 stages designed to identity the key factors in the conflict, reach agreements on next steps, and evaluate the results. Within the circle, all voices are heard and power is shared, to engender mutual understanding, self-responsibility and effective action. The process ends when actions have been found that bring mutual benefit.

Restorative Circles are a specific restorative practice whose development began with the work of Dominic Barter in Rio de Janeiro in the mid 1990s and continues with a growing community both in Brazil and internationally.

Restorative Circles-Seattle is currently developing a pilot project to establish and test the value of a Seattle-wide Restorative Justice system.  We invite individuals, organizations, community groups, and City of Seattle departments to participate in this voluntary project.

I have not been able to attend the most recent trainings or practice sessions due to scheduling conflicts.  I am trying to outline the Restorative Circle process to use in a very particular and urgent situation and would love to have a collaborator who is not in my church circle, since I am close to many involved.  Any volunteers?

We've been having great practice groups (2nd Thursdays) and may soon open a second monthly practice time.  Please come and join us!  Hope to see you at the next training June 9.  We'll offer a special rate for repeat participants:  we believe it is of great value to attend a number of intros.

I am happy to be a part of this group and enthusiastic about what we can make happen in our communities through this process. My background is in transformational leadership, holistic and sustainable business development, and more than 30 years in spiritual development. I have worked a great deal with the circle philosophy to bring people together, to do deep work, and to build connection, compassion, and reconciliation. I look forward to the possibilities.

By way of introduction, I am mostly involved with the community of the unsheltered folk in the Seattle/King County area, and with mainline churches and the interfaith community.  I came into contact with restorative circles first in the indigenous communities of Canada.  I see restorative circles as especially compatible with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and am particularly interested in promoting the use of these circles and the principles of restorative justice within Christian churches.  I'd love to network with others who share this interest or have experience using the circles in church conflicts or disciplinary processes.

Welcome, William!  I remember you well from the Illinois training.  I have told my Tucson friends about the training... Do you have Tucson contacts?  I've been trying to set up a Compassionate Listening workshop there and could use help...

We are moving forward with trainings and a pilot project for RC systems here in Seattle.  Let's all stay in touch!
