Topics Related to Compassion:
Generally, what I believe to be one of the most pressing issues in today’s society is a lack of compassion and concern for society and individual needs. Specifically, and what is my passion and what I would like to concentrate on, is veteran/soldier needs. We see an increasing number of veterans returning to society sometimes only to not understand their place, to see only change and sometimes not a good one in their eyes. There is a high prevalence of alcohol/drug related problems, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), suicide, and other numerous mental health/societal anomalies that add to this already stressful transition period. I would like to be an advocate for these soldiers/veterans and their evolution. They deserve the best we can offer them, being a veteran myself; it is a cause that makes me sometimes anguished and yet very passionate and they deserve my primary awareness. Some of the services that should be employed would be resource navigation, crisis intervention, advocacy, benefit assistance, and mental health therapy for conditions such as depression, PTSD, and drug and alcohol addiction. Yet this is not even mentioning the families involved along with the transitioning soldiers. They too have endured the ever-changing, tumultuous, sometimes chaotic aspects of soldier life and as such, deserve the same respect, admiration, and continuity of care and therefore should be afforded our utmost attention as well.
With this in mind, herein lies my charge, my commission, my dedication. I understand the yearning for belonging and the transitional soldier/veteran understands and longs for this with sometimes-tragic ends. With social services, which I know I possess, I can be a helping hand in the miasma, a friend and counselor to those in need. Social Workers continue to play a paramount role in the lives of veterans and their families during both wartime and the many transitional phases throughout their military/veteran career. This is where I belong.
