Collective Impact project gets front page coverage in the Sunday Seattle Times

In the wake of this article about New World Habits (the most read in the paper), we're getting extra coverage.  It's a not-to-be-missed opportunity to experience and promote the power of collective impact. This is at the heart of New World Habits, which helps individuals shift habits together, within a timeframe. So COMPASSIONISTAS, I'm calling for your support!  My belief is that this is of…See More

May 24, 2011 from 6pm to 8:30pm
Dear Friends,You are invited to a follow-up meeting to CAN's April 16 “collective impact” session.  We are energized by the meaningful engagement that day, the interweaving of community connections and commitments, and the confluence of interest and choice in making “compassion” tangible in action. For the next six months, we will be meeting and nurturing the seeds sown in April with the expectation of an October 'harvest' of what we can create together.  We envision moving forward as a single…See More

Compassion for the Earth, compassion for humanity

I've heard some people suggest that the Green movement should emphasize the relevance of environmental initiatives to people, so that it's not about doing something for the Earth but for people.  One should stress the impact on health, for example, in order to get people engaged.  In our consciousness, the Earth is still something separate from us, and so we still need lessons in how we are literally bound up in its welfare; it is not an automatic response.  (Or perhaps the response is being…See More

collective impact

What can we do to help the earth that requires no money, new infrastructure or technology, no legislation or political will, not even time (to speak of)? I’ve been wondering, why not kick our disposable cup habit together and make an instantaneous, collective shift?  Take three weeks.  So I’ve put together a website and joined with some non-profits (Sustainable Seattle, Zero Waste, Green Fest).  Coffeehouses are also onboard, including Caffe Ladro, Grateful Bread, and Cafe Javasti.  So a…See More

Happiness Initiative: video and survey!

Here is a great 10-min. video John de Graaf has just created, presenting the Seattle Area Happiness Initiative, with Richard Conlin endorsing measures of happiness as a new tool to create public policy.

So take the survey, if you haven't already.  Plus it's interesting to see your scores (for the various aspects of happiness) and make comparisons...

Hi - I am writing to ask for your support in creating a compassionate world. When I started the Compassionate Action Network I was hoping that social networks could be part of how we activate the will and find a way to make just and lasting change. I am grateful that you joined this network and I sincerely hope that it has made some difference in your life and your community.

It was the action part of compassionate action that got my attention. So now I invite you to be part of taking another step forward together. I ask that you take two minutes to join the 10 Year Campaign for Compassionate Cities if you haven’t already.

We need 1,000 people to join by March 15 to have the Mayor and City Council follow through on their end. If you personally join the campaign and share or send this on to others we will take a big collective step forward in building our capacity to make change happen. This is not just another petition, what you do will make a difference. You can learn more about this here

You don’t need to be a Seattle resident to join this campaign, and this idea is spreading. Campaigns have started or are starting in Vancouver, BC, Bellingham, Bellevue, Issaquah, Spokane, Portland, San Francisco, and London.

If there ever was a time to stand together and affirm that what each of us does and does not do makes a difference it is now. I ask that you find the time to add your name to the growing list of people awakening compassion in our cities and our world. Join here now

Welcome, Karin! After the Charter for Compassion Event, I look forward to more activities on CAN. Hope you'll make it to Open Space on 10/17 and perhaps we can brainstorm what Charter for Compassion Event we may put on for the NW on 11/12.

Enjoy this circle!

I think it was Wittgenstein who noted that the scientific view of the world is "how the world is" and the mystical view of the world is "that the world is." And, of course, the scientific — at its most profound level — is mystical.

Thanks, Karin. Maybe you'll be able to join us for the "Practical Personal Peacebuilding" free workshop on Saturday, the 10th of October, in Seattle or the "Connecting for Compassionate Action" gathering on Saturday, the 17th, at the Seattle Center ($10 — pretty inexpensive). If you do make one (or both), be sure to say "hi" when you see me. Be well.
