"Neighbor to Vecino" in Compassionate Basalt, Colorado, 8/13/2011

What an amazing week we've just enjoyed in our Compassionate community!  Over the last four months an intercultural, intergenerational group of folks has become our Compassionate Action Team--working together closely to create the first "event" since we joined the Campaign for Compassionate Cities on March 8, 2011.  The process knit us together in ways that transcended the planning itself.  Basalt's population is primarily either Anglo or Hispanic, English or Spanish as first language.  All of…See More

Compassionate Basalt

This story comes from a woman who lives in Compassionte Basalt, CO: I was selected as a juror for a civil trial in my county.  One day the discussion between the lawyers got a little heated, and the judge stopped everything for a minute.  He asked everyone if they knew that Basalt had become a Compassionte City.  He said that we all needed to respect each other, and be more like Basalt.  This was the bright spot for me that day, and it made me smile.  I was proud that my little town had decided…See More

Compassionate Basalt, Colorado

We're underway here in Basalt, Colorado as the second municipality to officially participate in the 10 Year Campaign for Compassionate Cities.  Our four middle school students--Stephanie Anglin, Lindsay Anderson, Chase Ellsperman, and Eli Pettet--and I are spreading the word about the Charter for Compassion and working with town employees to plan an Earth Day gathering that will build our Compassionate Action team.  The kids are SO ready to widen the circle of leadership!
