Watching the news is often an exercise in testing your endurance about crises, disasters and heart-breaking stories. The tsunami of bad news buries the abundance of good news stories that exist. If we are what we surround ourselves with then paying attention to the good news stories alters our experience of being alive.
A man I know was determined to stop watching or reading the news because he said it made him feel helpless and despondent. A friend of his challenged him – “There’s…

The Compassion Wars are here and they’re ugly. The loud cheering about health insurance and booing of gay soldiers is chilling. This is not the generous hearted spirit of America at its best. Where is the compassion that leads to hearts cracked open to discovering our common humanity and oneness with one another?
Self-compassion is a journey that leads to compassions for others. I’ve come to believe that we are each hard wired for compassion. So how does that square with what I…

Compassionate Basalt
This story comes from a woman who lives in Compassionte Basalt, CO:
I was selected as a juror for a civil trial in my county. One day the discussion between the lawyers got a little heated, and the judge stopped everything for a minute. He asked everyone if they knew that Basalt had become a Compassionte City. He said that we all needed to respect each other, and be more like Basalt. This was the bright spot for me that day, and it made me smile. I was proud that my…

President Obama has missed an opportunity at Ground Zero. Beyond the pathos of his visit is an invitation beyond the cheap closure he talks about. Is it possible that Ground Zero invites transformation from fear into freedom for compassion; transformation into a new common humanity?
ABC News correctly identifies the “flurry of emotions” around the Ground Zero…

Have you cheered the death of Osama Bin Laden? His death is a singularly cathartic time for Americans. Is a more profound human cheering at play?
I joined the cheering as I sat riveted by the TV images of crowds spontaneously gathering at the White House and Ground Zero when Bin Laden’s death was announced. I too wanted to wave my American flag.
Was I doing the unimaginable and rejoicing in the death ofanother human being? I am at the very least thankful to…

The earthquake, tsunami, human devastation and nuclear crisis in Japan are God answering prayer. Really? This bizarre interpretation is being circulated on YouTube by Pamela who says “I am so overjoyed” that God answers prayers directly. Is this pure craziness? It is the antithesis of compassion and spirituality.
I find this this view to be highly offensive. The video in question has been strongly rejected by many Americans.…

“Why are you going to a porn show?” I was asked. I’d never thought about Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball concert in those terms. I didn’t know what to think except that I was looking forward to it. This was no porn show. It was a spiritual revival in her very own travelling cathedral.
I was blown away by what I…
