Net Smart is the latest book from Howard Rheingold. As he put's it: "How you use social media matters to you, to me, and to everyone." He identifies five essential literacies: (1) attention, (2) crap detection, (3) participation, (4) collaboration, (5) network smarts.
He draws important connections between the distracting phenomenon of social media and how through meta-cognition (meditation) and awareness of breath we can focus our attention and practice mindful, digital citizenship.
It is a book for our time and no doubt it will be a classic. Here's a one minute video of Howard introducing the book. The video is a good example of what he's talking about:
