Compassionate Seattle

Next Tuesday, Sept. 20, during the meeting of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) Charter for Compassion will be presented by Jena Turner (assistant to Steven Shankman, the UNESCO Chair in Transcultural Studies), Ann Cole (Beyond War), Veena Howard (adjunct professor at the U of O and writing her doctoral thesis on Mahatma Gandhi), and myself (Eugene City of Peace).

We will each have 3 minutes for public comment, during which I will ask the HRC to recommend that the Eugene City Council:

  1. Affirm the Charter for Compassion.
  2. Proclaim support of a 10-year Compassionate City Campaign.
  3. Develop a Campaign implementation plan through city-hosted meetings with citizens, non-profits, educators, youth, businesses, and others to decide how we will support the Charter for Compassion.

I have invited all the City of Peace supporters to show up, be seen, and witness this presentation!

Mayor Kitty Piercy tells us the document “seems to fit with our human rights city work.”
