Global Citizen Journey is a tiny, grassroots, all volunteer-run operation that has generated giant miracles and touched the lives of hundreds of people. Our challenge right now is to take advantage of a $10,000 matching grant from the Foundation for Global Community. This grant will enable us to launch our Liberia Peacebuilder Initiative. We have only a few weeks to come up with $8,000. Please consider making a donation now and be as generous as you can: remember, with the matching grant, your contribution to GCJ will be doubled!
You may be wondering, why Liberia? Did you know many Liberians think of themselves as the 51st state? Yet most Americans barely know where it is on the map (SW corner of West Africa). Learning about America’s ties to Liberia will, I am confident, generate a connection in you. The U.S. is responsible for Liberia’s founding in 1837 (essentially, a US colony), its Constitution (modeled after ours), its flag (the star and stripes, but with one star), and, disturbingly, various narratives of US supported-creation of Charles Taylor and his destructive escapades.
Our purpose with the Liberia Peacebuilder Initiative is to establish a community-based, sustainable network for peace and reconciliation by bringing together teams of three (youth, elders, women) from ten different communities across all of Liberia’s many divides (age, ethnicity, faith, rural/urban, internally displaced/returning refugees) at a series of Summits in one of the nation’s most unstable regions. We’ll do capacity-building (compassionate listening, sharing traditional best practices, holding Town Halls) and networking with field workers from various non-profits. You can learn about our successful pilot mini-Summit last winter by viewing a subtitled photo album.
Check out the ongoing projects arising from our work in the Niger Delta (2005--library, microlending project, the film Sweet Crude); Axim, Ghana (2006--orphanage/community center/internet café) and Burundi (2008--womens’ agricultural cooperative) with periodic updates on the web and in our newsletters.
With almost NO administrative costs (no staff, no office), you can be assured that all your dollars go directly to the work in the communities. Whether it’s $10, $25, $50, $100 or more, please support GCJ’s work. DONATE HERE. Thank you. (PS: please forward to your friends and colleagues).
With appreciation for your support,
