There is an amazing wish being fulfilled over the next few weeks. Karen Armstrong, one of the most provocative and original thinkers on the role of religion in our world today recently won the
TED prize. TED stands for technology education and design and brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers.
Her wish was for the world to change the conversation about religion and to co-create a
charter for compassion. This is a collaborative effort to help the global community recognize the collective will to make peace and harmony present in our world:
“The Charter will show that the voice of negativity and violence so often associated with religion is the minority and that the voice of compassion is the majority”
The charter itself is being globally written online. People of all faiths, nations and backgrounds are invited to contribute. You and those you know can contribute to its creation. It is organized into different sections being worked on over a period of time. The
Preamble, being worked on now, has a few days left to add to. On November 20 the work will begin on the eight core
Affirmations. A week later on November 27 the work begins on specific
Calls to Action. A summary of the charter and its role in the world –
Final Declaration - will begin on December 4. There is a
Council of Sages that will help guide the collective input coming from all traditions around the world.
There is a
video on this site about the charter. We know that words matter and now can show that our words together can change the conversation about religion in the world today. Karen is leading a way, let’s show some compassionate action and discover how we can help amplify this effort.
