Update on Compassionate Seattle: Collective Impact

Greetings Compassionistas!

I hope this finds you, your family, and your community doing well and enjoying the summer.  I am writing to update you on some of the progress of Compassionate Seattle 2011: Collective Impact and to notify you of a few upcoming events.

Since April 16th at Seattle City Hall there are a number of Compassionate Seattle projects that have been moving forward:

The Compassionate Action Network (CAN) is launching a project to interview/record community leaders and create a fun and informative interactive map of Compassionate Seattle.   This map will feature people, groups and organizations working to create a compassionate region. The interactive map will be available on-line and on-display at Seattle Center during the Next Fifty, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair.

This Thursday (7/21) at 5:30 PM CAN will host an informational session about this project. We are looking to train volunteer Compassion Reporters, Researchers, Editors, and Map Makers who are interested in conducting interviews and contributing to the first version of this interactive map.

If you are interested in engaging with some of the most inspiring, compassionate leaders in our community please come and find out about this opportunity.  No experience is necessary to participate.  The Compassionate Action Network will provide training and access to equipment for use on this project.

The informational session - with refreshments - will take place on Thursday, July 21 from 5:30 PM to 8:00.  The address is 800 Maynard Avenue South (International District) Parking available.  There is no cost - free will offering/no one will be turned away.  Please RSVP here http://my.compassionateactionnetwork.com/events/mapping-compassiona...  If you have any questions, please contact Heidi Bruce.  We invite you, and others you know, to attend the session.

Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) Documentary Sneak Preview: Serving Life

The general public is invited to attend a free screening of “Serving Life” on Sunday, July 24th from 2:00 to 3:30PM at the Center for Spiritual Living in Seattle. There will be a brief discussion and refreshments after the film. Everyone is welcome to attend but space is limited so please RSVP online at the Compassionate Action Network or send email to jon@idealnetwork.com. The Center for Spiritual Living is located at 5801 Sand Point Way N.E. in Seattle, near Magnuson Park. Parking is free.

"Serving Life" is the first OWN original documentary airing on the network narrated and executive produced by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker.  The film takes viewers inside Louisiana's maximum security prison at Angola, where the average sentence is more than 90 years.  The prisoners within its walls are the worst of the worst - rapists, kidnappers and murderers.  With prison sentences so long, 85 percent will never again live in the outside world.  Instead, they will grow old and die in Angola.

"Serving Life" documents an extraordinary hospice program where hardened criminals care for their dying fellow inmates.  In doing so, they embark on a journey that may end in personal rehabilitation. " 'Serving Life' reveals the humanity that exists inside each and every one of us," said Whitaker. "In the Angola prison's hospice, we meet inmates who decide to take an opportunity for redemption, reminding us of the connection that exists between each and every human being."

Please join us on Sunday, July 24th at 2 PM.  You can RSVP here:
