Compassionate Seattle

From the corner of C and 3rd in Davis, California, U.S.A. --

Compassion is being, thinking, doing things and deeds for the betterment of mankind. On a smaller scale, it's thinking beyond self and the act of selflessness. When you put the interest of others before you, you are acting w/ compassion, for it does not judge, does not harbor the wrong, it is not self-seeking.

Compassion, as a noun, means to me the sense, the emotion, of caring for people. It is the feeling involved with passion; something or someone which a person feels compassion toward is that which they love and respect.

Compassion is accepting God in every being. Honor the God within and working to spread this knowledge with those we love.

Compassion is listening with an open mind, open heart, and open spirit. Respecting others for who they are and recognizing the power in differences. Reaching out to anyone regardless of pre-conceived notions.

An all pervasive energy that comes out of emptiness like the sparkle in a glass of fizzy drink.

Compassion is that spirit within us which prompts us to express our own humanity, one to another. It is the core of every world religion and if these religions ever come to draw together it will be through the compassion which is common to them all.

Is expressing love not only w/ words but with kind actions also. Compassion is everything from saying hi to someone off the street to helping a family member through a rough time.

An acceptance of all that is and all that will be. A love for all of nature and all organisms existing on planet earth, including we homo-sapiens. A commitment to respecting and nurturing the feelings and needs of other sentient beings.

Thanks, and you're welcome. Yes, a handful of kids have answered, the youngest being 6, she wrote, "Loveing and Careing." Other times when asking families the kids show interest and want to write something and/or on the spot the parents explain what compassion means to the child. Was once asked by a parent to explain to the child what compassion means. A group of kids from the high school got involved and through word-of-mouth some come up to write a response.

Thanks for another wonderful and uplifting entry. I loved the "sparkle in a fizzy drink" reference. I just posted links to these quotes in the new Compassionate Portland group. They have a discussion that asks group members to define compassion. Incidentally, have you asked kids the question too?
